may a maye mayeda. >> you can see temperatures climb close to 90. the first-pitch forecast should see temperatures around 70. and temperatures dropping into the 60s a little later on as the breeze starts to pick up. if you're going to head to the coast, santa cruz around 82, monterey 70, 86 yosemite. but notice cooler and breezy next week. we'll have a full forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> we're begin with a developing story. an intense search continues for a missing 9-year-old girl. that's ida rothschild. she disappeared from a camp ground yesterday. she was with her family at the

taylor stay park. we want to give you a live look at the command center where search and rescue crews and volunteers are getting ready to resume the search. ida wandered away last night when she was looking for her water bottle. here family is visiting california from new mexico. she was last seen in the rugged area near the point rays national seashore. that was about noon yesterday. >> we've done the hasty searching, the easier stuff, we put a rescue team into the river, a number of teams covering the trails and areas searching around the camp ground and through the river drainage. now if she went off trail and has been lost and confused one other time in the past, this terrain is not familiar to her, we need to get into these redwood forests. it very thick and difficult searching.

basically large area grid searches of the whole canyon. >> and our photographer, jim foster, was there for the search last night and there at the command center this morning bringing you these live pictures where the search will begin. it's expected to start in just about half an hour at 7:30. we'll be covering this search on our news all day long. >> president obama has made it clear that the u.s. will not put boots on the ground in response to the looming civil war in iraq. >> we will not be putting combat troops in iraq. i have asked my national security team to look at other options. >> al qaeda-connected islamic militant know as isis have attacked multiple cities across iraq. they are moving toward baghdad.

president obama said iraqi leaders must work together and confront this crisis. >> communication with the outside world also be affected for iraqi citizens. users cannot log on to facebook or twitter. they have been blocked. a kuwait news agency said the iraqi government shut down access because militants were using the sites. facebook and twitter blasted them for doing so. >> the unrest in iraq is pushing the price of crude oil higher, which could lead to higher gas prices here. there have been some refinery fires but so in is prompting a rise in rude oil just as gas

prices were starting to come down in the u.s. >> i think there's a lot of concern about iraq, but it is the fear of the future and the fear of uncertainty that's causing oil prices to rise. i think we could well see the price gasoline go up within days, 5 to 10 cents a gallon some are predicting. >> right now prices hover between $4.09 and $4.13 a gallon. experts are concerned neighboring countries could get involved, which could push prices higher. >> two jets were scrambled after a pair of russian bombers were spotted 50 miles off the coast. nora says the long range bombers flew within 50 miles of the

border. experts say they often to long range training in the summer but this is the first time they've come this close. some in washington are accusing russian president vladimir putin to talk to the u.s. turn. >> turning now to a local reptile warning. hot, dry weather may have more snakes searching for water. snakes are following prey to water-rich areas. on thursday a rattlesnake bit a 74-year-old man in his garage. luckily he only was left with a swollen hand. >> i figured a spider or something like that had bitten me and then i heard a rattle. i'd never seen a rattlesnake around the property. >> experts say keep a close eye on open spaces near garages especially and take caution if

you are reaching into any dark spaces. >> for the first time in more than a hundred years, a california condor has been spotted in san mateo county. this image was caught of the endangered vulture. they used to thrive in the area. many of them near penacles national park. it is one of the biggest birds in the world with a ten-foot wing span. >> and after past bids that failed, a city stepped closer to hosting the olympic games in 2024. up next.

on facebook, it's because after complaints, facebook is allowing pictures. >> i heard they weren't allowing breast feeding pictures. i had a really good picture and i put it up there and they took it down, within the day. >> the company has a policy of not showing a nude breast. maddon was a protester. >> i just felt that how sad that this country is still hung up on breast feeding when it's so important. >> reporter: this picture of a young mother breast feeding her 3-year-old was published on the cover of "time" magazine in 2012. it drew huge attention, mostly from moms to champion the image.

three weeks ago they posted their new policy under the q & a section of their site. it reads: we agree breast feeding is natural and beautiful. we're glad to know it's important for mothers to share their experiences with others. >> i think it's interesting that they did it quietly. i would think they would wear it like a badge pause i think when you know better, you do better. and i think they learned and they should be proud of that instead of hiding it. >> that was peggy bunker reporting. when maddon heard about the policy change a few days ago, one of the first things she did was change her profile photo to one where she's breast feeding her two girls. it's the same photo facebook removed back in 2008. >> facebook was on the agenda for republican heavy hitter chris christie during a bay area visit. he met with mark zuckerberg and

>> it a great day to be outside. that's a live picture of san francisco. if you are a hello kitty fan, you may want to step inside for a couple hours. giant warehouse sale at the holiday inn sfo. apparently all things hello kitty there. >> good morning. can the bay area pull it off? the 2024 summer olympics might be coming to san francisco. san francisco has been named among the four u.s. finalists to host the prestigious yet expensive event. we show you how organizers are convincing the committee to bring the games here. >> reporter: what's not to like about san francisco? the city by the bay is already considered a world class destination and with new venues like the 49ers' levi stadium in santa clara and the warriors arena in san francisco, the bay area could be a contender to host the 2024 olympics.

member bourne, australia. l.a. has hosted the games twice. detroit holds the olympic record for bidding the most without ever hosting. if the olympics were held here, we'd have to be in medal contention for the bs weather, right, rob? >> we'll see the sea breeze picking up this afternoon. the sunshine and air quality looks pretty good, too. not much fog in san francisco this morning. a little patchy fog down towards santa cruz and half moon bay. we'll see the low clouds thin out as we head through midday. the sea breeze very weak, not much of a sea breeze at all. we'll see temperatures warm quickly through 2:00 this afternoon and then we'll see some cooling as the wet system

dropping out a sea breeze. tomorrow, high clouds, should be a gorgeous one. it's also going to bring up the onshore winds. the evening will be a little blustery around the bay area. for tomorrow, low car r cards to start and so we're going to transition out of a pattern today which allows inland temperatures to the uper 80s, which will lead to the stronger sea breeze and some cooler temperatures kicking in for tomorrow and especially as we head towards monday and tuesday, you can see the changes as the temperatures trend cooler next week. 82 close to 70. temperatures around the north bay, around 82 degrees toward san a rose a. some of the warmst valley. we do have the radio parade.

>> making another person smile. of all the ways we can make the world a better place, it seems like a very small one. but in this morning's bay area proud, we see how one man's wish to see his wife smile during a difficult time has taken on a life of its own. garvin thomas has their touching and colorful story. >> reporter: as hard as the doctors and nurses try to make it otherwise, valerie's twice monthly immunotherapy infusions are not all that pleasant. from the moment with the needle to the hours of nothing, there is not much to make her smile. which is why it is so great that should valerie need a smile, all she has to do is look at the purple polish at the tips of her toes and think of the story behind them. >> it's just something fun to get through this experience.

>> reporter: valerie's experience began last august. it was just about a month before her wedding to long-time partner ralph when doctors told valerie the cough that had nagged her for more than throw years was something very serious, stage four lung cancer. >> it's just devastating to receive that diagnosis. >> reporter: the month that followed was a dark time, valerie admits. but that is when, with hopes of raising her spirits just a little, ralph took valerie to get a pedicure. she went with her favorite color, purple. then so did ralph. >> he said he'd do his toes purple as well to make me smile. >> hoped. it seemed to work, though. you were laughing pretty good, though, so that was nice. >> it turned out to be the first

of many smiles. after ralph posted a picture of their painted toes, a remarkable thing happened. their friends started doing the same, followed by complete strangers, who had heard about what ralph it done. hundreds upon hundreds of them, all painting their toes and sending their pictures just to make valerie smile. >> it touches my heart. it just really gets down to a deep level and just the support and the fun that i think people have with it, too, that i want it to be really both. >> reporter: it has, though, become even more than that. with the help of friends, these wonderful gestures have grown into a fund-raising campaign, one that has raised more than $12,000 for lung cancer research and continues to raise the spirits of one woman who needs it now more than ever.

wonderful. meteorologist rob mayeda will have the latest for us. we'll head over to rob right now as a matter of fact. good morning, rob. >> good morning. we're seeing mostly sunny sky, not just in san jose but san francisco looks sunny as well. our forecast, we can head out to the coast, close to 70 in monterey with patchy low clouds. nice day to head down highway 17. 72 in lake tahoe. we're going to see cooling as we head into the beginning of next week, as a water system right here is going to approach the day area and bring some clouds late in the day and cooling changes ahead as we look at the father's day forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you. we continue to following a developing story this morning. an inn tension search continues right now for a missing 9-year-old girl.

this is ida rothschild. she disappeared from a camp ground yesterday afternoon. she was with her family camping at the samuel p. taylor state park in marin county. let's take a live look at the command center where rescuers and volunteers are getting ready to resume the search this morning. they say she left the camp ground in search of her water bottle yesterday around noon. her family is visiting california. they're here from new mexico. deputies she last seen near a rugged area near the point seashore yesterday. >> we've done the hasty searching, the easier stuff, put a rescue team in the river, a number of krals, fire roads, around the camp ground and through the river drainage.

she has been lost and confused one other time in the past. the terrain is not familiar to her. we need to get into the area and start searching. >> and our photographer jim foster there was all night. he's at the command center now bringing you these life pictures where this morning's search is expected to start any minute. we will certainly keep you updated on this search. we'll of course be covering the story on our newscast at 5:00, 6:00 and 11:00 and all dave on on nbcbayarea.com. >> a brushfire burned dangerously close to many other homes. it destroyed 16 acres and some homeowners grabbed hoses and helped firefighters. the wind was a challenge fanning those claims. more than 100 firefighters worked to keep the fire from

spreading to more homes. as you saw there, a dog being walked out. people got out safely. a crew has remained on scene overnight to assure no more playups. >> the crisis continues in iraq. here at home u.s. soldiers and commanders who served in iraq have mixed emotions. they have seized the cities of mosul and as they move toward baghdad, they are pushing the brink of civil war. the cost to iraqis was high. the country appears to be descending into chaos at militants marched toward the capital. president obama says he will not seasoned combat troops into this conflict. >> the united states will do our part but understand it's ultimately up to the iraqis and a sovereign nation to solve their problems. >> the president says he'll continue to work with the iraqi government to finalize a u.s.

to $4.13 a gallon. experts are concerned that neighboring countries may get involved in the fighting, which could push gas prices even higher for a more prolonged period of time. >> back on u.s. soil, for the first time in five years, sergeant bowe bergdahl is now recovering at a military hospital in texas. he arrived yesterday from a u.s. base in germany. military officials say he is in good physical condition but they are working on his emotional recovery. bergdahl was held by the taliban in afghanistan for five years. much of the time spent in solitary confinement. he was released after a controversial swap for five taliban prisoners. as for bergdahl's family, they are not in texas and at this time it's not known when they will be reunited. >> although it is a returnee's choice to determine when and who they want to engage with socially. i believe the family understands that process at this point in

time. >> as for reports that bergdahl deserted his post, the they investigate that after the reunion is complete. >> former dodgers owner frank mccourt was called to testify yesterday in a los angeles courtroom. he says fan safety was his top priority and he denied slashing security costs. stow's father was in the courtroom and he was not convinced. >> it didn't seem like he was in charge of the organization and it didn't seem like he answered a lot of the questions that were answered. i thought he should have known. >> two men were accused of attacking stow in the parking lot in 2011 leaving him with permanent brain damage. his family is suing for $50 million for what they call a lack security. >> much more ahead on "today in

welcome back. mostly sun see skies to start off your saturday morning. mostly in the 50s, 60 closer to palo alto. just after 1:00 today, should see temperatures comfortably in the 70s. toward the evening on the east side of the bay by oakland coliseum, should see the numbers near 70 around first pitch time and dropping into the 60s as high clouds spill in and the sea breeze turns stronger as we head towards the evening. onshore winds increasing this weekend. air quality actually pretty good for inland locations today, moderate air quality levels towards the north bay and the coast. santa cruz clearing out. we should see temperatures in the low 80s this afternoon. the sea breeze has really backed

off. most locations seeing light onshore winds. the system will push high cloud away. a little later this afternoon and behind it, that will reinforce the ocean air conditioning, which will lead to cooling as we head into tomorrow. you see patches of cloud around the coastline and mainly to mostly cloudy skies and the north bay toward the early evening, across the central bay by 6:00. tomorrow morning you'll see areas of low cloud and maybe some mist on the coast around pillar point heading down towards santa cruz with patches of low clouds inland for the morning on sunday. the pattern change as we go to the second half of the weekend will be high pressure giving ground. as we go into tomorrow, it will retreat to the left allowing a deep trough to anchor itself here across the west coast beginning tomorrow. that's going to drop our

spending. chief investigative reporter tony kovaleski has the case. >> the respected dean told our cameras if he thought there needed to be a deeper investigation, he would have asked for it. we now now the you has called for a deeper investigation and we know that dean is out. the message came in this e-mail from the dean simply stating "as of july 1, 2014, i will no longer be dean. and it includes "i will be retreating to the faculty." >> did dean bullock resign? was he forced out? what led to the decision? >> it's a fair question, tony, but it's a personnel matter and a confidential matter and i can't discuss the reason for the deans returning back to faculty. >> reporter: he's san jose's provost, the second most powerful on campus.

provost feinstein met with dean bullock following the investigation and problems in the justice studies department. can you answer if he was forced out orf he resigned? >> i cannot. >> reporter: we know he announced his departure as sustain on friday in an e-mail to staff, a decision two weeks after students, staff and faculty aired their concerns on nbc in the bay area. >> i wonder what's going on and how he justifies his actions. >> reporter: after the dean declined our request for an interview, we met him at the airport, asking him to explain his decision about what students, staff and faculty called a coverup investigation. it's your department. the buck stops at your desk, right? >> absolutely.

>> reporter: they're trying to understand why a further investigation didn't take place. is there an answer? >> as i said before, i felt that the investigation that was needed is what i did. >> reporter: days after he made that statement, he chose to step down, while they call for a new investigation, a special audit of the department of justice studies. are you happy with the way this unfolded in justice studies? >> i think we are not happy about what unfolded in justice studies. we also -- and the president and i both agree -- that the initial investigation was too narrow and was not thorough enough. and i think that's one of the primary reasons why the president has requested from the chancellor's office a complete investigation of what occurred in justice studies. >> reporter: the chancellor's auditors are now asking questions and reviewing documents, questions about this

unauthorized university checking account, questions about the former department head using the account for personal expenses of over $7,000 and questions about a university report that concluded there were no fiscal improprieties. where did the report fail to meet your expectation? >> well, it's clear that mark correa inappropriately spent funds at the of thuniversity, a that's what i want more information on, what else occurred in justice studies. >> reporter: correa left the university two years ago but now his spending is center stage of a much larger investigation. >> we're on a path to gather more information, address the mistakes we made and find

here you brought gabby and pie. they need foster homes. >> they do. they're not quite often enough to be fixed. >> that's okay. that's what happens on live tv with little kittens. >> they're not old enough to be adopted but they can go to a foster family now. that is the best job. this is such a fun age for kittens, it's so much fun playing with them and socializing them. they would come back in a few weeks and we would spay and neuter them and get them ready to go. >> what do you want people to do with the socialization? lots of games? >> absolutely. playing. a lot of handling so they learn hands are kind. lots of love. >> together or is it okay for them to be separated? >> in kitten world, two is
